Suffolk County Public Safety Committee

This Committee shall have jurisdiction over all matters pertaining to:

  • The Suffolk County Police Department

  • The Office of the Medical Examiner

  • Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services

  • The County Sheriff’s Department

  • The day-to-day operation of the County Correctional Facilities

  • The Probation Department

  • Auxiliary Police

  • The County Police District

  • The District Attorney’s Office

  • “Crack House” legislation

  • Forfeiture and Seizure Laws

  • All law-enforcement related business or activities

Relevant Authorities

  • Along with the County Executive and the Presiding Officer of the Legislature, the Public Safety Committee shares direct oversight authority over agency use of federal and state asset forfeiture funds for purchases valued at more than $20,000 and confidential purchases.  

  • The Chairman of the Public Safety, or his or her designee, is a member of the Suffolk County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, whose members include, among others, the Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature or their designee, the Suffolk County District Attorney or their designee, the Suffolk County Police Commissioner or their designee, and the Suffolk County Sheriff or their designee. The Criminal Justice Coordinating Council has the power to hold public hearings and to request any agency to supply statistics, data, program reports and other material as it deems necessary to carry out its function.

  • The Chairman of the Public Safety, or his or her designee, is a member of the Suffolk County Criminal Justice Supportive Services Coordination Committee, whose members include, among others, the Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature or their designee, the Chairperson of the Legislature’s Human Services Committee or their designee, the Suffolk County District Attorney or their designee, the Suffolk County Police Commissioner or their designee, and the Suffolk County Sheriff or their designee.

  • The Chairman of the Public Safety, or his or her designee, is a member of the Suffolk County Addiction Prevention and Support Advisory Panel, whose members include, among others, the Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature or their designee, the Chairperson of the Legislature’s Health Committee or their designee, the Suffolk County District Attorney or their designee, the Suffolk County Police Commissioner or their designee, the Suffolk County Sheriff or their designee and the President of the Fire Chiefs Council of Suffolk County or their representative.
