Because: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
― Martin Luther King Jr.
UJPLI is a coalition that consists of a cross-section of social equity advocates and civic entities representing a broad range of interests bound by a common commitment to social justice.
We stand for the elimination of harmful policing practices. We work to eliminate ongoing violence and inequity experienced by Black, Latinx, Indigenous, people of color, and immigrants as well as other oppressed communities. We seek policing policies informed by research, education, community-based advocacy, and civic engagement by impacted communities.
Law enforcement’s roles, responsibilities, and authorities must be re-imagined and harmonized within a broader public health and wellness context.
This site provides research, education, and advocacy resources to
a) Identify the elements and workings of systemic racism that facilitate racial and ethnic inequities;
b) Inform the public about ongoing racial inequities in policing with a particular focus on the Suffolk County Police Department;
c) Disrupt near-monopoly control of public information and the public policy narrative by law enforcement in general and the SCPD, its labor unions and those they support in particular; and
d) Facilitate probing inquiry and informed consideration of the best path forward – considerations that include:
The impact of enduring systemic intolerance and discrimination towards members of marginalized Suffolk County communities;
The adverse consequences of police / law enforcement misconduct, deception, and misinformation on Suffolk County residents;
The inadequacy of oversight of SCPD policing by public officials; and
The scope, scale and legality of police union political campaign expenditures, their undue influence on elected officials and public policy, and their adverse financial and public health implications
e) Offer ways to Take Action to promote community safety and transform policing
